There’s a pastor in this presbytery whose path has been crossing mine for… well over a decade…
We got the chance to talk at the last presbytery meeting (when we helped pass 10-A- hooray!) and I filled her in on my dissertation idea, and exam prep plans, etc. And… she’s just that kind of person… I told her about the insecurity that creeps up, regularly, how frequently I. just. don’t. feel. like. a. scholar. And don’t think I ever will.
And she said “Really? Because I feel so much energy coming from you as you talk about your dissertation idea and your exam prep. I couldn’t muster an ounce of energy for tasks like that, but you are full of energy for all of it. I think that says a lot.”
And I keep thinking about that. She focused my attention on what I have- energy. It is rather like my advisor’s wife telling me I was determined at the beginning of the year. Energy and determination… those are two HUGE things to have… sure there’s lots I don’t have… but with energy and determination… I’ve got this.
Focus on what you have, Sarah. Focus on what you have.
Energy. Determination. Tenacity (one of my favorite words!). You are scary smart too. Miss you!
Oh, you’re so sweet, kp. Miss you too! So sorry we haven’t connected in FOREVER. You’re welcome in Nashville ANY time… I’m pretty occupied 6-3 most days… but still… you’re welcome…
Sarah, you have so much passion for this work! Have you taken a look at your FB status stream lately? Your blog posts? This is YOU, girl!!! What you live, breathe, and look forward to. God gave this to you.
I’ve noticed most grad students I know don’t believe they’re really as scholarly as “everyone else,” at least in the humanities. So, know you’re in good company.
Heidi, you’re such a faithful cheerleader. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This is great, and I totally get it. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I forget that the things that get me really revved up are dry as toast to some people, and that energy can be a great component of discernment. Hurrah for you to be feeling it now!
Thanks, Di!
