Sometime last week I reserved a carrel in the general library of the University for my studying purposes this year (or this semester at least). I tried to get a carrel on the fifth floor as that is where most of the religion folks have carrels, but the one I requested was already booked. I was going to settle for one with a lesser view, but the helpful woman at the circulation desk scanned the list of available carrels and suggested that a particular one on the seventh floor might be more to my liking. So I went and checked it out. And indeed she was right. A window view, with trees outside, decent light, and a VERY quiet nook. So I took it.
But I haven’t told anyone I know just where my carrel is. And I’ve never seen anyone I know on this floor.
So, when I arrived a little after 8:30 this morning to finish up my notetaking for the paper I need to write, I was surprised to find a gerbera daisy on the shelf above the light in my carrel. A scrap of note paper had been torn off and wrapped around the stem, written on this stem was “beauty lives”. The magenta/burgundy daisy is a bit limp, so perhaps it was placed there yesterday, but it is still fairly healthy.
So, do you think I have a secret admirer? Or that one of my colleagues found out which carrel was mine and left me a birthday treat? Any clues?
I do love flowers…
