KEVIN HAS A JOB!!!!!
I think I mentioned here that I bought a sweatshirt at the University bookstore for myself a few days after my birthday because I had forgotten to bring a sweater that day and it seemed a good birthday present to give myself. While in the store hunting for a sweatshirt I saw a big sign up indicating that they were hiring. I inquired as to whether they hire non-students and indeed they do. I called Kevin right away and he came by later and asked to speak to a manager (what the sign said to do), but there were no managers around. So he took an application, filled it out, and hand delivered it the next morning- still no manager around.
He stopped in on Monday to see what the status of his application was and… the manager was there! The manager had not, however, seen his application, largely because of his disorganization it seems not because the employee who took Kev’s application failed to follow through. It is a good thing he stopped in. The manager found and reviewed his application while he was still there and indicated that they have only one full time position available, overseeing internet sales, would he be interested? Yes, indeed, he was interested. He offered to provide a fuller job history and the manager asked him to e-mail that so he tweaked his resumé later that day and prepared a helpful cover letter (showing off some computer savvy in the process) and got that off right away. He hadn’t heard anything by Wednesday so he called. (Yay for the assertiveness. That seems to be what it takes to get a job in this city!) The manager indicated they’d like him to come in for an interview in the next few days and by the end of the day he had an interview scheduled for Friday morning. He met me on the quad of the div school to debrief his interview and my presentation at 11 a.m. and he was feeling good about the job, the people he’d work with, the hours, the compensation, the benefits (!) and they had said they’d be in touch that afternoon or Monday morning.
And late yesterday afternoon they offered the job, at the top of their pay scale and asked him when he could start. He said “Monday”. So Monday it is!
The job is basically a 9:45-6:00 job, Monday to Friday, on campus a several minute walk from where I spend most of my time. Bookstore employees are also, apparently, responsible for concessions at sporting events so he’ll have to work some weekends, but his hours would be adjusted accordingly.
It also appears that the church (the first service we go to every Sunday) that has hired him as children and youth choir director is going to have him start an adult choir and if so that his compensation there will go up significantly. So, between the two jobs we’re financially right about where we thought we needed to be! And the church job allows him to grow vocationally (he’s considered first call sub for the organist there too, which is also a good thing).
A lot is coming together for Kevin all at once and it is very exciting. He is joining the church (where he’ll be working) tomorrow morning and auditioning/starting to sing with a community choir this coming Monday evening. He didn’t make the symphony chorus, but our midwife let us know about another choir really in need of men and when he called to inquire about auditioning they told him to just come early to rehearsal this coming Monday evening. So… I’m sure he’s in.
It is great, I think, that we’ll both be on campus. Now if we can just arrange childcare on or near campus…
