Inquiring minds want to know, apparently, what book I’m reading. ‘Tis “Outline of a Theory of Practice” by Pierre Bourdieu. You can read a bit of it here. I am supposed to read two chapters, just two chapters, by 8 tomorrow morning. Those in the class who are divinity students are only supposed to read chapter 2 and chapter 2 will be the focus of our discussion tomorrow. So… what have I accomplished by 4 today (diligently honoring my intentions of no internet, brief breaks for domesticity- thanks for the blessings- and a cumulative six hours- about- of reading and noteteaking- which supplements the three or four hours on Saturday)? I have finished chapter one and the first two pages of chapter two. Crap. Guess I should have started with chapter two since that is the focus text, but I’m too stinking linear and didn’t think a good strategy for understanding a difficult book was to start at chapter two. I think I was right about that, but now it looks like I’m going to have to wake up crazy early and get through as much of chapter 2 as possible.
I’m taking reading for Friday’s class that I didn’t get to yesterday to my hair appt though People magazine sounds way more appealing about now.
But… I’ve been diligent today and I thank God for that. And now I need to mail out a present for my father and get across town for my appointment.
