It seems there was much to appreciate about my lecture. I tried to do too much for the time allotted to me, which led to some rushing towards the end, and some of the major work I did could have driven a reorganization of the lecture that would have made the lecture more compelling and more effective. I wasted time at the beginning of the lecture giving too much historical background in an apparently somewhat confusing way. A handout I spent a lot of time on, for example, ended up barely getting mentioned, and yet, if I had built the lecture around the handout, it would have been a more focused lecture and the handout wouldn’t have been wasted- sort of. The biggest criticisms were on evidences of my nervousness- can you guess what one comment was regarding? Hmm?
I thought that was pretty funny given my reflections on my tendency to flush right here on this blog last week. But I also got comments on umming (a product of speaking without a manuscript, I’m sure), and rushing. The funny thing about the flushing is that most folks chalked it up to my pregnancy and were apparently worried I was about to faint. Um, no. But o.k..
Lots of compliments though. Some creative angles into the text that were different than approaches colleagues had taken, some really effective illuminations of the argument, I handled the discussion time really effectively (yay parish experience and yay previous experience fielding questions in all sorts of settings- sometimes even hostile setting… national church work).
People seemed bored out of their gourd while I was lecturing, but… one… I’m used to preaching for White Presbyterians so… used to that. And… I better get used to that phenomenon as a prof. because, how many times have I likely looked bored out of my gourd during lectures- even when I wasn’t.
Thanks for all your thoughts and support and encouragement.
Silent asked if this is the class I have two projects for in one week. Yes, though it isn’t as bad as I initially thought. Next Monday is fall break so I technically have until next Monday to get my theses done for the disputation I’ll engage in in two weeks. I want to get them done by Friday so that I can get a fall break, but first… more Bourdieu to read and reading and posting to do for my Friday class. So… Thursday and Friday are going to have to be very productive. Here’s hoping I don’t totally crash again!
