- Barter– Kev has worked out an arrangement with one of our next door neighbors whereby our neighbor keeps our (very big) lawn cut (and deals with some other landscaping too, though kev didn’t realize that was part of the deal, ultimately, we’re grateful) in exchange for piano lessons. Apparently he has wanted to learn piano for years and is very motivated. Our lawn was cut for the second time in a week this afternoon and the first piano lesson happened tonight. We sort of liked the meadow that our yard was becoming, but the neighbors, on both sides… not so much. So, for the sake of not feeling judged, and for the satisfaction of a yard that can be walked all through easily… this is a great deal. And Kev would much rather teach piano than mow the lawn- esp because here the lawn needs mowing every 5 days or so!!!
- Accomplishing Another Goal- I received official word today that I passed my German exam. I so wanted to be able to say that even though I didn’t take classes this past semester I made progress toward my Ph.d. I wanted to be able to say this concretely. And now I can! I am required to demonstrate reading proficiency in two modern research languages and I have done that. So, I have met one requirement for my Ph.D. in full. This summer I’ll wrap up my guided reading for course credit. Next year is going to be super demanding, next summer, and the fall after that too, but… this is not hanging over me. And I LOVE that. And just generally love knowing that I took myself from minimal German to an ability to translate and summarize academic writing! Yes there was grace in the passages on which I was tested, but… two months ago… I couldn’t have done it! A month ago I couldn’t have done it! I really learned a lot. And I love that!
- Flexibility in my Schedule– So, should I happen to fall asleep with my baby as I try to get her down for a nap… so be it. Love it.
